we've been defrauded, but now what?

so we've lost our money on a fraudulent transaction, but the only information ebay has given us is they've turned it over to the "appropriate authorities". doesn't do me much good or help me sleep at night. does anyone have experience tracking down people who spoofed/phished money out of people? where do we start [after we get over the shame of being stupid]? lawyer, police, fbi, mafia???

If you sent Western Union because you got fake emails claiming it was backed by eBay, etc...
There is little you can do.

In the hundreds of posts regarding that very popular scam, I only heard of ONE person getting Western Union to refund. (because the money was not picked up by the person who it was intended for)

Where does Western Union say the money was picked up?
What ID was used?
Was the person who picjed it up the same person the transaction was made out for?

Know a lawyer?
Contact your state Attorney General's office.
Western Union settled with 47 states to implement anti-fraud procedures.

Did the agent warn you about sending money for an online purchase, or did the scammer teach you to lie to the agent and say it was for a friend or family member?
He is supposed to warn you not to pay for online purchases using Western Union.

THANK YOU EVERYONE SO FAR FOR YOUR AWESOME RESPONSES. i am working on my internet connection and will update with more info asap. quickly: yes, we were told to lie to western union, yes we know a lawyer [ME! stupid lawyers. . . ], i have an ebay ID, email address: [email protected], and fax number for this person. the transaction number [certainly fake as the entire email is fake] is Transaction #KWM297180529, and more info to come. we want our money back, sure, but we want this person/people to be stopped [and knee-capped] as well!

Can't believe a lawyer fell for that. Anyway, would be good to have an actual lawyer around.
